LL.M. Applications

LL.M. applicants have two options for submitting the application and required materials:

• Submitting via Law School Admission Council (LSAC)
• Submitting directly to the Graduate Programs Office (GPO)

Application Deadlines

• Spring 2025 Application: October 15, 2024
• Fall 2025 Application: May 1, 2025

Required Materials

• LL.M. application
• Personal statement: In 1-2 pages, double-spaced, explain why you are applying to the LL.M. program and what you hope to gain from your studies at the University of Wisconsin Law School. Include information such as your prior experience, your current interests, and your future goals.
• Resume
• Two letters of recommendation: Letters of recommendation should be from individuals who can attest to your skills and abilities in an academic or professional capacity.
• Official transcripts: Submit official transcripts from all higher education institutions attended (undergraduate, law school, etc.). If transcripts are not in English, submit certified translations with them.
• English language proficiency test score*
• $60 non-refundable application fee

*English Language Proficiency Test Requirement

All applicants are required to take an English language proficiency test, whose first language is not English, to adequately demonstrate English competency as part of the application process. We accept TOEFL, IELTS, and Duolingo English Test scores.

• Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL): A total score of 92 or higher is recommended. We accept MyBest ™ scores for the TOEFL iBT ® test, in addition to TOEFL iBT scores from a single test date. Learn more about TOEFL »
• International English Language Testing System (IELTS): A total score of 7.0 or higher is recommended. Learn more about IELTS »

Applicants with scores below the recommended score are still encouraged to apply.

Submitting via LSAC

Applicants may apply online through the Law School Admission Council (LSAC). You will need to create an LSAC LLM account, if you have not already. For more information on each required item below, view the full list of Required Materials.

• $60 non-refundable application fee: Pay the application fee via credit card when you are ready to submit your completed application

• Letters of recommendation

Spring 2025 Application

• Letters of recommendation: Applicants should have their recommenders email letters of recommendation as a PDF attachment to the Graduate Programs Office at GPO@law.wisc.edu.
• English Language Proficiency Test Scores (only accepted electronically):
  
  • TOEFL score:
    • Applicants should have their TOEFL score electronically sent to the University of Wisconsin Law School by using the institutional code C130
    • Applicants should contact the test center directly where they took the IELTS test and request that their test score be sent to the following E-Delivery account using the IELTS system.
    • All IELTS centers worldwide are able to send scores electronically to our institution.
    • You must provide the following information to the test center where you took the test when requesting your score:
      • E-Delivery Account Name: University of Wisconsin Law School
      • Address (associated with E-Delivery account): 975 Bascom Mall, Madison, WI 53706
      • Applicants should have their certified test results sent electronically to the University of Wisconsin Law School from their Duolingo account

      Wisconsin Residency

      The Graduate Programs Office will email you instructions to complete the Record of Residence Form online.

      Application Status

      The Graduate Programs admission committee reviews applications based on the date they are complete, and does so on a rolling basis. Applications are considered complete when the Graduate Programs Office has received all the required materials.

      Usually, applicants will be notified of a decision within four weeks after the application file is considered complete, but that cannot always be guaranteed. The Graduate Programs Office corresponds with applicants primarily through email, and occasionally by regular mail.
